Metaloumin supports Energy Autonomy in Agios Efstratios

Thanks to a new sustainable energy project built in 2024 on Metaloumin mountings, the small Aegean Sea island of Agios Efstratios, now sits in history books as the first hybrid energy-autonomous Greek island, powered by renewable sources (RES).

Following the examples of Halki in 2021- where Metaloumin also held an active part – and Tilos, which broke ahead in 2017 (PV Magazine 12/2024 & 01/2025 | 78538 issue), Ag. Efstratios acquired its own renewable energy power station, achieving productive self-sufficiency.

The station’s photovoltaic segment, with a maximum production capacity of 0.2268 MW, is an integral part of the entire hybrid system, furnishing wide local RES spread and high efficiency rates.

Together with a wind turbine and an energy storage grid of 0.9 MW and 2.56 MWh capacities respectively, the photovoltaic system contributes decisively in achieving an unprecedented RES penetration rate for a Greek region, exceeding 85%. Total energy produced covers the electricity, heating, and hot water needs of the island, transforming Agios Efstratios into a Greek sustainable development model.

Metaloumin’s advanced mounting systems ensure the efficient, sturdy photovoltaic panel operation in the island’s demanding climatic conditions. Designed for energy production gains, structural robustness, and durability in a hard weather milieu, the mounting systems restate Metaloumin’s continuing commitment to manufacturing leadership for sustainability.

“Metaloumin was honored to contribute to a pioneering project that effectively transforms Agios Efstratios, and sets a new milestone for renewable energy integration in remote communities. The project shows the power of collaboration and innovative technology along the green energy transition,” company representatives said.

The hybrid energy system, developed under the operational program “Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation“, and backed by the European Regional Development Fund, is proof of Greece’s pledge to the renewable energy source transition and environmental protection initiatives.

The project’s success paves the way for more to be implemented in other remote areas, showing how innovative partnerships and advanced technology can indeed lead to truly sustainable results.
